Chapter 115 - Mind Games: Day 6

Well it’s been almost 8 months since I posted a comic.  Just where did the time go?  In short, I’ll tell ya…

I had to leave comics for awhile due to my teaching placements.  I was spending all my nights preparing lesson plans which made producing comics impossible…at least at the quality I wanted them.  I Finished Teacher’s College, 18th in my class.  Not bad for a class of 18, eh?  About half way through, I realized that I definitely have this deep desire to help people, to make a difference…and Teaching was close to the mark, but not it.  I always wanted to be a cop.  My mother has said many times I would make an excellent one, and my mother has never ever been wrong about anything.  Ever.  Ask her.  So as it stands now, I have completed all my preliminary tests, submitted my application to the Police Force, a recruiter has my file in hand, and now I am eagerly waiting to move forward.  I’m excited more driven than I have ever been.

In March of this year I found my Dad after 25 yrs of being estranged.  He didn’t say much, of course most cremated people don’t.  That’s right…he’s dust.  Missed him by 8 months.  I claimed his ashes, as well as his parents and brought them home where he belongs.  My sister and I are planning a trip to Graceland to spread the ashes.  My old man was the biggest Elvis Fan I have ever known, and his friend told me he always wanted to go to Graceland.  So he’s going, and I won’t have to waste money on a t-shirt for him.

So in short…Dad’s dead.  I am chasing a career closest to a Superhero I can find.  Oh…and I am creatively happy.  I don’t think this comic has ever looked so good or been this funny.  I’m no longer concerned with what readers think.  I know most love me, and the ones who do not, well…there is obviously something wrong with them and their parents.

The big question is always, “How many days a week are you updating?”  That’s the first thing Witmer asked me when we started chatting.  I don’t know.  We’ll start with one day a week.  Fridays.

Some other exciting news, and Jim is going to squirt-a-turd when he finds out I spilled it…is Jim and I have discussed bringing back The Panel Mammals.  It’s our baby, we never really meant to put her down, and the two of us can do great things together.  It’s that simple.  We are like thinkers and have a dream.  Panel Mammals 2042…Wait for it!

And my last bit of yap before you get to listen to the song is this…Some Day Hero is still very much alive.  More than ever the comic and story needs to be told.  Gimme some time and I promise you that the WOW that SDH first generated will be back.  We are going back to square one, so buckle up.

I’m back…and I gotta feeling that tonight’s gonna be a good, good night.

@ MJ - Rufus’ reign will last up to October-ish…Just around the time of our Canadian Thanksgiving. Glad to see you still reading, MJ. I owe you a prize…

@ Justin - Look for an email from me this weekend…I got your email but for some reason it went into my spam. Glad you still like the comic.

  5. Lucas

  6. Jarrett

@ wit - Nice Moose…Or do you mean best moose you ever-did-seen?

@ Lucas - Now that’s how you plug. Nice big picture, clear and concise promo, forever updating blog dates…

I’ve been waiting patiently for my prize, still awaiting to see what kind of sweet goods it may be. As soon as I get around to it I’ll hit you up with a plug over at my blog for the National Free Press.

Taking a hiatus is one thing. Going silent and not even saying “need a hiatus while I get my shit together” is another. For months, people were commenting “hellooo” on your site, hoping you’d give us at least a peep to let us know you were alive and intending on returning eventually, and you couldn’t even shoot off a couple of sentences.

I’m not someone with abandonment issues, but I do expect a certain level of good manners. It’s not that you disappeared for 8 months, but the way you did it, that pisses me off. It really took for granted the dedication of your fans and treated them shabbily.

Do what you’re going to do, but when you ask other people to join you on a journey, you owe them at least a small amount of consideration. Please keep that in mind if you end up going to the police academy and have to take another break.

J-dude! Glad yer back in a manner that suits you. Interesting to read your account - some Spooky parallels there - took my wife to Alberta last summer for the first time, she managed to find my estranged mother of 5 years! Ammendments were made, but it didn’t last, got an e-mail January 1st this year saying (in effect) don’t contact me, I won’t reply!.

And I thought thngs were going so well !?

There’s some abandonment issues - lose someone, find ‘em, only to have them reject you in the end! Hey Ho !

The police eh? Had a friend go off to join the Mounties once!

Oh yeah, has anyone told Laurinda your about??? She’s gonna miss the fun!

Any ideas on the I.F.s I.F.s? we talked once right?

Seriously, glad your in a place you want to be!

  11. Jarrett

    @ MJ - ummm…prize…sweet goods….ya. Ya, sure. he-he-he-he…
Thanks for th eplug by the way.

@ Greg - I agree with what you said, and apologize to you again, here, and to everyone else. I honestly have a hard time believing that people are attached to my comics and characters as much as I am…some even more…and so I sometimes forget there are others out there who depend on my creativity for their very survival…well, you know what I mean.

@ me - Lower your tone…or else you won’t last a single day on the island.

@ Jan - See you are always so nice…can you talk to Greg?? LOL. Look for an email to you personally…

I’m gonna have to side with Greg on a few things here and hold you accountable. For the record, I didn’t ask “how many days a week”, I asked “what is your rotation going to be.”

Just be careful how you handle your people. I’ve always given you shit for your “hyping tactic.” I think your fans are looking for a little follow-thru. Obviously, you have people in your corner rooting for you. Throw down.

  13. Jarrett

“how many days a week” = “what is your rotation going to be.”…so don’t get nit-picky.

As far as hype and follow through…I have always delivered what I have hyped. That I know…now whether LIFE puts my comics on the back burner now and then, well, it is what it is.

  14. Jarrett

AND JUST LIKE…a monkey wrench was thrown into tomorrows comic. My son has a fever so the night has been stolen from me. 6 PANEL comic is inked and coming soon.

  20. Laurinda

Now I TOO am back! SOOOOOOO great to have you back too Jarrett. My computer crashed and took everything (except my saved documents which did NOT inlcude web faves and contacts) with it. I am so happy to have you back on track that I am somehwat baffled (and just a touch offended) by Greg’s rant. I knew you’d come back when you were ready. I did not feel betrayed in the least. After my brother passed away last November not long after we’d made up after a brief estrangement, I don’t ream into anyone anymore. Heart’s not in it. Just LOVE you guys, Greg included, and glad to have a reason to say Hi again. As for the cop thing, my dad was a Mountie for 25 years (from the midst of the depression until the mid 50s) and I almost joined in the 70s when women were finally allowed in, but I discovered that I was a ntural born teacher so I stuck with that and met YOU, Jarrett and all you guys (through Jarrett) as a result. So I am back, you are back, they are back, we are all back. Hooray!!!!!!!!

  21. Laurinda

Hmm, a natural born teacher who cannot spell! I also forgot to mention Jarrett, that my sympatico email is up the spout (down the spout at the moment) so it you wish to send anything to edit or just a regular email, hold off til I get it back.

  22. Jan

Hey Laurinda!!!!! I’m glad your’e back too! Was worried we had seen the last of you! I realy thought you were gonna miss the fun - but it ain’t so! Which is most cool!

Women in the mounties?? whatever next?!

Comic Critique Time (since there’s nothing new…)

What I love - The art and design: Very well done as always. Those bottom four panels are all very strong - the second one is really well done, and I love the rendering of Martin the Moose, especially how his antlers sag when he gets startled - great expression and line-work there.

What I hate: The lack of word balloon tales. The color coding isn’t doing it for me. I find it confusing and distracting that I have to try and sort out who’s saying what. I can never tell if someone is thinking something, or saying it, or if it’s a sound effect at a glance. Obviously after I look at it for a second, I can sort things out, but the fact that I constantly have to sort it out is distracting and takes me out of the experience.

One other issue that might not matter: Personally, I feel like the top two panels are unnecessary for a webcomic. Were this a print comic that hadn’t appeared for a while, I could see using the ‘previously on’ to catch readers up, but on the web anyone who needs an update can hit the ‘previous’ button. Just my opinion though, and some readers might disagree.

    September 17th… “it’s coming soon.”
    September 24th… “it’s coming.”
    October 2nd… sound of crickets.

I’d taken this and Someday Hero out of my RSS reader when it became apparent there weren’t going to be any new comics for a while. When Jarrett came back, I decided to be cautious and not re-add them quite yet, just in case this was merely an Elvis sighting.

Turns out Elvis has left the building once again.

  27. Jarrett

This Wed, Oct 7th it will be here…sorry..son has been terribly sick.

  28. Laurinda

Hi Jarrett. Hope your son is MUCH better. And Greg, Elvis has returned to the building and glad to have him back whenever he can make it!
